Eleven years later, I’m glad I visited the 9/11 memorial. I saw a mother with her two young kids at the memorial and the kids come to a name and excitedly yell, “I found him! I found him!”. The mother catches up with them and begins to tear up and the kids ask, “Why are you crying?” and the mother says, “Because I’m sad!”
The kids probably were not alive during 9/11 or maybe were infants so they do not understand the heaviness that comes with finding a name they know on the memorial. I felt terrible for the mother and I now have this memory of her and her kids finding this name and while I’m sad for that family, it helps me not to forget the intensity of that day.
