One of my favorite moments in Sydney happened on my very first day there with my friend Sasha and her hubby Chase. Our walk across the Harbour Bridge ended in the Royal Botanic Gardens where we sat on some blankets spread out half in the sun and half in the shade and had a picnic.
Sasha made this really amazing sandwich pie, which is how I would describe it but she got the recipe from Pippa Middleton’s cookbook (let’s not hate on Pippa). Chase made his sangria and so the sandwich-sangria combo was just perfect.
I took my shoes and socks off and rubbed them against the cool blades of grass and I can’t remember the last time I did something like that, which now just reminds me of Richard Gere in Pretty Woman.
The birds! I loved seeing the rare birds that aren’t just in a zoo but are just hanging out in the park with you and I liked taking pictures of them and also secretly hoping they wouldn’t attack me or our picnic. It’s fall in Sydney now so it wasn’t boiling hot and the gardens weren’t crowded at all and it was actually really peaceful and I was able to just lay in the sun and do nothing but relax.
It was the first time in a while where I didn’t feel or worry about a thing and it felt nice. Whenever I’m on vacation I always look forward to the times where I can just sit and do nothing or read a book and I also resolve to do more of that at home but for some reason it just doesn’t happen as much. Now that I’m finished with grad school I hope I can keep my resolution although San Francisco doesn’t have anything as beautiful as the Royal Botanic Gardens.
