New York Eats in February 2016

eats

Don’t be fooled by the sunny skies in the above photo. The sun may have been shining but it was super cold in New York when I visited a few weeks ago for work. I have a couple sets of thermal clothes that only see the light of day when I go to the Big Apple this time of year and those garments coupled with the good food I seek out helps me feel better about the weather. I’ll be the first to admit I’m a California wimp, okay? Here are some of the places where I found some good eats in New York.

Munich for the Weekend: The English Garden and Cafe Luitpold

munich

I love strolling through a beautiful park in Europe. So the English Garden in Munich was my absolute must-do activity while in town for the weekend. What I love about a park stroll is the peace and quiet you find even though you may be smack dab in the middle of a busy city and the fresh air, greenery, and exercise is just plain good for the soul.

Munich for the Weekend: Viktualien Market

viktualien

This past October I went to Germany for the Frankfurt Book Fair, and lucky for me I flew there a few days early to enjoy a weekend in Munich. I suggest you tack on a vacation day or two to a work trip any chance you get. I had heard many good things about Munich and I thought two days seemed like the perfect amount of time to get to know a little bit about this city. On Saturday morning, my first thing to do was head to Viktualien Market.

Holiday Tea at Crown and Crumpet

holiday tea

Ever since my nephews arrived on the scene in the last few years, my family has decided to buy Christmas presents just for the little ones. We don’t have to stress about getting more stuff for each other and can enjoy the kids’ reactions when they open their gifts. It’s the best part of Christmas anyway. My friends and I have adopted the same kind of thinking too and for the holidays we find a fun experience to do together instead of exchanging presents. Which is especially nice when you have been friends for decades and have no idea what to get each other anymore. This past weekend my best friends, Dee and Sasha, and I went to a holiday tea at Crown & Crumpet in San Francisco.

Eating Our Way Through Pescadero and Half Moon Bay

pescadero

My best friend Dee and I like to say we have been friends “since the womb.” Our older brother and sister were in grade school together so our Moms knew each other when they were pregnant with us and we’ve known each other since kindergarten. So it’s a bit of an understatement to say we’ve been friends for a while. It’s a rarity to have a friend for that long and you would think we would be bored of each other by now but not so. We don’t need to do or say a whole lot to have fun together. We do like to eat and go to new places so for her 30th birthday recently we were perfectly happy eating our way through Pescadero and Half Moon Bay.

The Wine Country Bachelorette

wine country bachelorette

When ideas for bachelor or bachelorette parties are thrown around, Las Vegas is usually one of the first suggestions but I’m now hearing more and more alternatives like weekend trips to Nashville, Montreal, or camping. Personally, I’m becoming averse to the Las Vegas bachelorette and its clubs, smoky casinos, and 24-hour party on the strip. And since I live in San Francisco, a relaxing bachelorette party in wine country sounds pretty ideal. Maybe I’m just getting older.

New York Eats in May 2015

Flatiron building

So May was a busy month for eating. After my trips to Italy (which I have yet to write about), Texas, and most recently New York, I’m scaling back on the food and indulging in some exercise but if you know me I definitely don’t deprive myself of the sweets! The last week of the month I went to New York again for work but this time my cousin joined me. This was her first trip to New York so she got to play tourist during the day while I worked and then we would meet up for breakfasts or dinners. I also got to visit with my good friend from college and my other cousin and the weather was pretty good. We were spared from the rain and we dined. Here are all the delicious things I ate.

Dallas for the Weekend

dallas

In mid-May, my family went down to Dallas, Texas for my nephew’s first birthday and baptism. My sister-in-law’s family is from there and so we decided to have all the festivities there in one weekend. I had never been to Dallas before or anywhere in the South and of course I’m always down to explore someplace new. Here’s what happened.
