Don’t be fooled by the sunny skies in the above photo. The sun may have been shining but it was super cold in New York when I visited a few weeks ago for work. I have a couple sets of thermal clothes that only see the light of day when I go to the Big Apple this time of year and those garments coupled with the good food I seek out helps me feel better about the weather. I’ll be the first to admit I’m a California wimp, okay? Here are some of the places where I found some good eats in New York.
My friends and I were driving back from Placerville this weekend where we had spent the day in Apple Hill. To keep us occupied on the two and a half hour drive back to San Francisco, we listened to comedian Iliza Shlesinger’s stand up bit about girls loving fall. Have you seen it? It’s hilarious because it is so true. Girls love the leaves, wearing boots and coats, and pumpkin everything. And the fact that us girls had just spent an entire day in Apple Hill, the epitome of fall, made us the exact people Iliza was making fun of but I don’t care. Apple Hill was gorgeous and smelled heavenly and reminded me why I love this cozy, festive season.
My best friend Dee and I like to say we have been friends “since the womb.” Our older brother and sister were in grade school together so our Moms knew each other when they were pregnant with us and we’ve known each other since kindergarten. So it’s a bit of an understatement to say we’ve been friends for a while. It’s a rarity to have a friend for that long and you would think we would be bored of each other by now but not so. We don’t need to do or say a whole lot to have fun together. We do like to eat and go to new places so for her 30th birthday recently we were perfectly happy eating our way through Pescadero and Half Moon Bay. Continue reading →
When ideas for bachelor or bachelorette parties are thrown around, Las Vegas is usually one of the first suggestions but I’m now hearing more and more alternatives like weekend trips to Nashville, Montreal, or camping. Personally, I’m becoming averse to the Las Vegas bachelorette and its clubs, smoky casinos, and 24-hour party on the strip. And since I live in San Francisco, a relaxing bachelorette party in wine country sounds pretty ideal. Maybe I’m just getting older.
For my 30th birthday, the only thing I wanted to do, besides celebrate with family and friends, was to go somewhere new. My best friends Sasha and Dee planned the perfect day in Bodega Bay which was full of food, sun, relaxation, and beautiful views.
So May was a busy month for eating. After my trips to Italy (which I have yet to write about), Texas, and most recently New York, I’m scaling back on the food and indulging in some exercise but if you know me I definitely don’t deprive myself of the sweets! The last week of the month I went to New York again for work but this time my cousin joined me. This was her first trip to New York so she got to play tourist during the day while I worked and then we would meet up for breakfasts or dinners. I also got to visit with my good friend from college and my other cousin and the weather was pretty good. We were spared from the rain and we dined. Here are all the delicious things I ate.
In mid-May, my family went down to Dallas, Texas for my nephew’s first birthday and baptism. My sister-in-law’s family is from there and so we decided to have all the festivities there in one weekend. I had never been to Dallas before or anywhere in the South and of course I’m always down to explore someplace new. Here’s what happened.
Trying new foods is without a doubt my favorite thing to do when I travel. But I know I don’t have to get on a plane to enjoy eating out because there are so many great places to eat right here in San Francisco. So I thought it would be fun to share the restaurants and cafes, with enticing photos to boot, I visit with my friends or family on a monthly basis so here is what I ate in May!
I love a good cup of tea and a scone. Since I miss sitting down for this treat at The Orangery in London, I like having a tea room here at home where I can go whenever a craving comes on. Lovejoy’s Tea Room is cozy and traditional and my favorite place to go for tea in the city. I recently went there with my cousins for a leisurely afternoon.
