San Francisco Eats in May 2015

Trying new foods is without a doubt my favorite thing to do when I travel. But I know I don’t have to get on a plane to enjoy eating out because there are so many great places to eat right here in San Francisco. So I thought it would be fun to share the restaurants and cafes, with enticing photos to boot, I visit with my friends or family on a monthly basis so here is what I ate in May!

My friend Hilary planned a surprise birthday party for her hubby at Off the Grid in the Presidio. Off the Grid is basically a food truck market that travels to a different neighborhood in the city every day of the week. You can try all different kinds of foods in one place and prices are reasonable. It’s basically foodie heaven and I couldn’t wait to go and sample as many new foods as I could. Off the Grid is only in the Presidio on Sundays and only during the summer. It’s such a great weekend activity to picnic out on the grassy lawn, get some sun, and pig out.

In a doughnut trance. Both the sweet and savory doughnuts came with dipping sauces

Even though the line was long, we heard the wait was worth it for Del Popolo’s wood-fired pizza

And it was worth it

vietnamese sandwich
Later in the month, I tried the five-spice chicken Vietnamese sandwich from Dragon Eats. It was good but the bread was a little tough. I like the Vietnamese sandwiches at Dinosaurs better.
Another morning, my friends and I sampled some pastries at Marla Bakery. The place is really popular now but my chocolate croissant was just okay. I’ve certainly had better but I should’ve asked them to warm it up. We intended to come for brunch but we were a couple hours early and they were all booked up so next time I’ll make a reservation for brunch. Coffee was delicious though.

Luckily Cassava Bakery was right up the street. They’ve expanded the restaurant since I was there last time. My friends got the braised short ribs hash with quinoa, potatoes, egg, lettuce, kumquats, and fennel. I ordered the Mr. and Mrs. Croque Sandwich with ham, turkey, egg, cheese, tomato, avocado, arugula, and a walnut pesto. Everything was so good and filling!

Over Memorial Day weekend, my friends and I went to the Sunset Reservoir Brewing Company and that night there just so happened to be a Golden State Warriors viewing party going on at the restaurant

And I opted for the brewing company’s burger for my main course because oh my god, the caramelized onions
